ODM Summons Members for Orchestrating Chaos

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) called on elected and nominated politicians who attended two events over the weekend that descended into chaos, including police officers brandishing tear gas canisters.

The party issued a statement in which it stated that politicians must disclose and clarify any role they may have had in inciting the outbreak of violence.

On Wednesday, May 8, the leaders are anticipated to report to Chungwa House, the party headquarters.

“The party hereby calls upon all elected and nominated ODM leaders who attended these two events to come before the party leadership at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at the party headquarters (Chungwa House) to explain their role, if any, in these regrettable events,” a portion of the statement said.

The party has also criticized the local politicians for working together with the police to organize the protests at the two different events.

“We vehemently condemn the use of police to incite violence at the direction of political figures.”

The rights, freedoms, and privileges guaranteed by the constitution are guaranteed by the democratic gains this country has made over the last three decades. These rights are in line with the reforms that turned the police force into a service, according to ODM.

The party also urged the Inspector General of Police to look into the situation and instruct police officers on how to behave in similar situations.

ODM claimed to have video footage from a funeral event that took place in Migori on Friday, which purportedly demonstrated that the police and local politicians had planned the chaos.

One of the two injured parties in the Friday afternoon incident was a nine-year-old boy.
