UDA Senator Proposes Extending Presidential Term
If a bill that is scheduled to be presented in the Senate is approved, Kenya might see adjustments in its election campaigning.
Preliminary information about the Bill indicates that an amendment is proposed to extend the President’s term from five to seven years.
In addition, if the bill is approved, members of the legislature, governors, and county assembly members (MCAs) will all benefit from the extended term period of seven years.
Additionally, the bill suggests incorporating the Office of the Prime Minister into the constitution. Musalia Mudavadi, the leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC), currently serves as the nation’s prime cabinet secretary, despite the 2010 constitution’s lack of mention of this position.
In the event that the bill is approved, counties may also gain because it would increase the equitable share of national revenue for devolved units from 15% to 40%.
The bill’s requirement that the Senate and National Assembly both approve the Kenya Defense Forces’ (KDF) deployment to other countries is another important feature.
The bill’s anticipated sponsor, Samson Cherargei, has also suggested that an impeachment proceeding brought against a governor and deputy governor be appealed solely to the Supreme Court.
The National Dialogue Committee’s (NADCO) recommendations are in the background when the bill is introduced.
The bipartisan committee pushed for the establishment of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Leader of the Opposition’s official Office, and the offices of his two deputies.
It is instructive to note that Cherargei had previously presented a proposal of a similar nature in September 2023.
But President William Ruto shot it down, saying he will uphold the constitution to the letter.
