University Suspends All-Academic Trips Following Bus Accident

Following an accident involving a bus  carrying  65 students, Moi University has  stated that all academic trips would be  suspended until after the Easter breaks.

The decision was made just a few hours after the incident on Wednesday,  March 27, in the early hours, at Kimende on the Nakuru-Nairobi route.

Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey shared the instruction on the university’s official  social  media account and expressed appreciation that the mishap did not result in any  injuries or fatalities.

“This morning at approximately 9:50 a.m., our University Bus KCK 583U, carrying  65 students, was engaged in a non-fatal traffic accident in the Kimende region on the Nakuru – Nairobi Highway. The students were traveling for academic purposes with students  from the Department of Kiswahili at the School of Arts and Social Sciences.

I’m happy to let you know that everyone in the  class is safe and there were neither  injuries nor fatalities. To transport them back to Main Campus, a bus  has been sent out,” said Kosgey.

Lari Sub-County Deputy Police Commander Francis Njomo confirmed that 12 students sustained injuries and were taken to Orthodox Hospital in Kimende town for treatment.

Njomo provided details on the accident, explaining that the driver lost control for unspecified reasons, causing the bus to veer off the road and into a ditch.

While the injured pupils are being treated in adjacent medical facilities, police have  launched investigations into the accident’s cause.

The university bus wreckage has been transported to the Lari police station while  investigators work to determine what caused the event.

The university’s commitment to student safety was reiterated in the statement,  which also urged prudence among drivers and other road users during the Easter  holidays.

Two weeks ago, in Voi, Taita Taveta County, a same tragedy involving a Kenyatta  University vehicle occurred. Eleven students lost their lives in that accident, while multiple others were injured.

The Ministry of Transportation has announced new initiatives to address the  issue  of road safety in response to the accidents that have raised concerns about it.
