Residents Beat up Kanjos in Nairobi
Kenyans were taken aback on Sunday, March 10, when a video showing residents of an estate beating up Nairobi City Council officers—also referred to as “kanjos”—emerged.
The officers can be seen on camera seizing a few things, including plywood that seems to have been taken from a nearby hardware store. The citizens and the officers got into a fight as a result of this.
A local person hauled the items out of the police vehicle, drawing attention from nearby residents and onlookers. Another resident was shown slapping one of the kanjos after disagreeing with him while holding a hammer.
Onlookers who were enraged by the behaviour of the officers were heard inciting others. They could be heard accusing kanjos of failing to respect other people’s businesses.
“Life is hard for everyone, leave the young man alone. We have been quiet for so long,” the residents were heard shouting.
Additionally, a section of other locals confronted some of the officers who could be seen walking away to avoid escalating the matter.
But the cops, who jumped into their pickup and managed to flee, were trailed by a furious public. While some of the residents went after the car, yelling and throwing stones, others jumped atop it.
Kenyans have denounced these officers for harassing residents in Nairobi after the incident. The majority demanded that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja step in.
Kenyans also advised their fellow citizens against intervening on their own. Some praised the residents for speaking out against the officers’ alleged mistreatment and harassment.
Stories of Kenyans taking drastic measures in 2023 after kanjos disrupted their companies have been more common.
The indignation of Nairobi residents and Kenyans in general was aroused in October of last year when county enforcement officers conducting an operation in the Nairobi Business District vandalized and confiscated trollies used by vendors selling eggs and smokes.
Similarly, when a video of a kanjo smashing into a female driver’s car while she was trying to park went viral in October of last year, Kenyans threw their support behind the Nairobi County Government.
