Ruto to Campaign for Raila’s AU Commission Chairperson Role

In order to support Raila Odinga, the head of the Azimio la Umoja party, in his bid  to become the chairperson of the African Union (AU) commission, President  William Ruto has established a committee. Funded by the exchequer, the group has attracted government officials as members  and plans to include opposition officials to bolster the proposal.

Local media state that Ruto helped Raila with his lobbying in several African nations and cleared the path for the opposition leader to declare his interest in the top AU position. It was proclaimed by Musalia Mudavadi, the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs and Prime Cabinet Secretary, in a speech on Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that Eastern Africa was ready to assume the leadership role within the AU.

“The Central, Southern and Western Africa regions have had their share since 2002, so it is now time for the Eastern and Northern Africa regions. Under the rotational rules, Eastern Africa has the first opportunity when the term of the current chair expires end of this year,” Mudavadi stated.

Azimio la Umoja leaders led by Kalonzo Musyoka on Friday rallied behind their principal, promising to support his bid for the top AU job.

“We will do everything in our power to support his candidacy, and we fully support his decision,” said Kalonzo. On Thursday, February 15, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo supported Raila for the AU position, saying that the leader of Azimio was the best person to succeed Moussa Faki.

“I have done a lot of consulting. Speaking after receiving the endorsement, Raila said, “I believe I am prepared to serve the continent of Africa.” Additionally, Raila Odinga accepted the support to run for the February 2025 position as commissioner of the Africa Union.

In support of his candidacy, the opposition leader mobilized his colleagues at the Au, pointing to his impeccable track record as the previous union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development.
