Kuppet petitions TSC to transfer teachers over hostile community

In a request to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has stated that teachers at a Nyamira school are in danger of being lynched by the locals.

The community allegedly advised the nine instructors of Mogusii Mixed Secondary School in Borabu Sub-county not to approach the school, which did poorly in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. As a result, the teachers have not reported to work for the past three weeks.

On Tuesday, members of the union led by the Chairman George Makaa, Executive Secretary Lewis Nyakweba, Vice Chairman George Ayieko, Branch Treasurer Stella Moturi and assistant Secretary Festus Segera matched to TSC Nyamira county offices where they sought audience with the Deputy Director Collins Ariko after they failed to find the Director Catherine Mwenda who was away.

The officials matched alongside the affected teachers to the county headquarters where they also addressed the County Director of Education, Joseph Kaga. The unionists said the hostility against the teachers was related to land conflict involving the school and the surrounding community.

On the same property as the school and even in its immediate vicinity, there are roughly four ongoing cases. We don’t want the fights to result in the deaths or serious injuries of our instructors,” Makaa stated. Nyakweba stated that on January 15, after throwing stones at the buildings, angry locals rushed the staff room and frog-matched the teachers.

He stated, “They stormed the school and, in front of their students, frog-matched the teachers in a very humiliating manner before ordering them not to come near the school anymore.”

According to the Kuppet Executive Secretary, three of the professors had been frog-matched by young people who asked them why they were disobeying the institution’s regulations before they decided to stay away. The union asserted that because of the individuals engaged in the altercations, security personnel were unwilling to confront the issue.

Currently, the school has only 50 students, half of the population that was there in 2023. Nyakweba noted that in the 2023 KCSE exams the school got a mean score of 2.9.

Nevertheless, Nyamira County Police Commander Agnes Amojong stated that her office had not received any reports regarding the incident, even as Kuppet brought the case before TSC.
