At Riomego Primary School in Kisii County, hundreds of students are tallying their losses following a suspicious fire that destroyed one of the school’s dorms on Saturday afternoon. The school has been the source of reports of fire problems three times this week; two of the incidents occurred on Thursday.
Despite this, the County Government’s dispatch of firefighters managed to get to the scene promptly and assisted in keeping the fire contained before it got out of control.Out of the hundreds of students involved in the sad occurrence, only a handful were able to escape with their belongings before the fire quickly spread throughout the building.
Thankfully, none of the three fire events resulted in any casualties or injuries being reported.Although the primary cause of the fire is yet unknown, investigations have been started to find out more information.
The Kenya Red Cross reported a fire occurrence at the same school on Thursday of this week, when the fire entirely destroyed two dormitories at midday and evening, respectively.
“A fire emergency is occurring at Romego Boarding School in Nyamira County. A portion of a statement from Kenya Red Cross stated, “Our response team, actively engaged in response efforts and collaboration, is working to address the situation.”
On Thursday, February 1, another event of a similar nature occurred at St. John’s Girls Secondary School in Kaloleni, Kilifi County; as a result, the school administration decided to send the girls home. With the assistance of the firefighters and members of the community, police officers were able to arrive on time and assisted in putting out the fire.
Paul Katana, a member of parliament for Kaloleni, stated in his remarks on the subject that he concurred with the school administration in releasing the pupils to lessen their panic episodes. “The students have experienced some trauma, but we have given them permission to travel and remain with their parents. We are currently organizing the setup of an improvised dorm. Everything has been ruined, as you can see,” the MP continued.
