The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has come under heavy fire from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu for removing teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo Secondary School, where they were subjected to intimidation after achieving low marks in the 2023 KCSE exams. Machogu is calling for a reversal of this decision, stressing that the welfare of the child must come first in all school-related decisions.

Teachers’ unions and civil rights organizations have taken offense at the closing of Isongo Secondary School, which was brought on by an attack on the principal. These organizations contend that it is unfair to punish students for the deeds of a small number of parents. Machogu responded by declaring on Friday that the school will reopen in a week and that the teachers would return right away.

“I made an order that the field education officers, the county director, quality  assurance, TSC, and all other stakeholders were to conduct investigations and  submit a report,” the man said. The CS promised to look into the attacks and deal with the perpetrators. By the end of January, the report on the St. Gabriel Isongo incident should be  finished, along with a discussion of suggestions for averting future occurrences  of this kind. Machogu contended that it was unjust to place the entire blame for students’ low  performance in the 2023 KCSE examinations on the teachers alone. He emphasized that many stakeholders have an impact on exam results and  argued in favor of working together to raise educational standards.

In support of this idea, Johnson Nzioka, National Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA), emphasized the necessity of collaboration between teachers, parents, and communities.
