The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia said in a statement that the cargo plane crashed just before it touched down at the airport.When the aircraft swerved off the runway, it was carrying humanitarian supplies to the regional headquarters of the World Food Programme Agency (WFP).Locals hurried to the aircraft after it crashed in order to save its occupants. From the scene, two passengers were saved.
But the pilot passed away from his wounds. “The United Nations in Somalia sends its condolences to the family and friends of the victim, and wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement began.
“The United Nations is working with the airline’s contractor and the authorities of the Federal Government and those of the South West State to investigate the incident.”After a quick inspection, it is discovered that the aircraft is a Jetways Airlines Fokker 50 freight carrying a Kenyan flag. Based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, Jetway Airlines is a legally recognized airline.Less than a week has passed since a second UN chopper crashed in Somalia and was seized by the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab.
Nine people were on board when the helicopter touched down in Dhusamareb, an area thought to be controlled by Al-Shabaab.The nine passengers included a Somali national as well as independent contractors after the collision.
