NYS Requirement 2024: Qualifications for Enlistment
On Wednesday, January 10, the National Youth Service (NYS) published a list of prerequisites for young Kenyans who wished to enlist. This came about as a result of the paramilitary training force receiving a large number of mails from Kenyans inquiring about the qualifications for enlisting in 2024.
The recruitment process, according to NYS, would be carried out in each of Kenya’s 47 counties’ sub-counties. NYS stated that a public notice would be made in print and electronic media on the recruitment day.
Qualifications & Requirements for 2024 NYS Recruitment
Anybody who wants to join NYS has to be a naturalized citizen of Kenya. Citizens by naturalization are not eligible to enroll. Kenyans who are interested in joining the Service must be between the ages of 18 and 24. This is consistent with NYS’s mission to be a premier hub for empowering, developing, and training Kenyan youth.
Interested candidates must have completed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum grade of D (plain) or its equivalent. The young person needs to be physically and medically fit. This is determined throughout the hiring process. Adolescents present at the recruitment event must not have a criminal record. It is necessary to provide documentation of a certificate of good conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Finally, prospective applicants need to fulfill any additional requirements that the Director General may specify from time to time.
Employment Opportunities After Training
Young Kenyans were reassured by NYS that the Service has created an exit strategy that guarantees all graduates are placed in jobs after the program is over. A statement from NYS stated, “To name but a few, 80 percent transition to other disciplined services, labor export to Europe amongst others.” President William Ruto ordered in November 2023 that NYS trainees be given preference when hiring police and military personnel.
