Politicians Clash Over the Cost of Living

At a fundraiser on Saturday in North Mugirango, MPs from Kenya Kwanza and Azimio sparred verbally, demonstrating the ongoing disagreement between the two political groups on living expenses.Speaking during the occasion, the MPs provided varying explanations of how Kenya came to be in its current situation, which has resulted in skyrocketing prices for necessities like food and utilities.

The Kenya Kwanza MPs, led by Marakwet West MP Timothy Toroitich, asked Kenyans to have patience, pointing out that the government was forced to prioritize paying off the nation’s rapidly growing national debt since it was in a tight spot. The economy of Kenya has somewhat contracted. But William Samoei Ruto’s administration is working extremely hard to pay off the debt, according to Toroitich.

The Kenya Kwanza MPs further trained their guns on the Judiciary for what they described as constantly issuing orders that go on to stall the implementation of key government services. However, Azimio MPs who attended the meeting would have none of that, stressing that the major driver behind the high cost of living was the Kenya Kwanza government’s taxation appetite.

The MPs, led by Anthony Kibagendi of Kitutu Chache South, supported their arguments by stating that the Executive had declined to lower fuel costs and taxes, something the government might have done to lower living expenses. The MPs with ties to Azimio also insisted that Kenyans could live comfortably off of the government’s revenue collection.

Citing the vice’s damaging effects on Kenya, they asked their peers to press the President to step up the battle against corruption. The MPs connected to Azimio said in their statements that the government should be in charge of regulating living expenses because it is capable of doing so.

The same day, in another incident in Ugenya, violent teenagers threatened to physically harm Ruto ally David Ochieng, a native of Luo Nyanza, and forced him to leave a funeral attended by Azimio leader Raila Odinga. The MP’s recent decision to leave the Azimio group and join the Kenya Kwanza Alliance is believed to have infuriated the enraged youth.
