The first group of Kenyan teachers to get employment in the US was announced by the country’s government on Saturday.
This came when the State Department of Diaspora Affairs and the Teachers Service Commission decided on a policy and regulatory framework regulating teachers’ labor mobility in February 2024.
The Secretary of Investments and Entrepreneurship, Ambassador Isaiya Kabira, bid farewell to the first group of teachers departing for the United States.
According to a statement from the State Department of Diaspora Affairs, the goal of this effort is to improve Kenya’s socio-economic growth by finding employment possibilities elsewhere.
“In line with the mandate of the State Department of Diaspora Affairs to promote the welfare of the Kenyan diaspora, the recruitment initiative offers comprehensive support during the transition period through pre-departure sessions,” the Department revealed of the exercise.
“This initiative emphasises on the broader impact of labour mobility and Kenya’s position in the global labour market.”
According to the State Department, more teachers will be exported to different countries in the coming days.
This followed the February 2024 assessment that revealed there was an increasing demand for Kenyan teachers in Africa and outside the continent.
Notably, the Kenya Kwanza administration has also been sending workers abroad to several nations with which Kenya has bilateral labor agreements.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Oman received 500 migrant laborers, according to information disclosed by Labor Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore on February 3.
The batch that left on Saturday, July 6, marked the first instance in which Kenya exported a whole team to engage in specialized labor.
At first, the majority of Kenyans were sending unskilled or semi-skilled laborers overseas.
In the past, President William Ruto has disclosed that Kenya aims to export approximately 5,000 trained and semi-skilled laborers per week.
