Mass teacher transfers are expected to start as a result of the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) discovery that primary schools using the new CBC curriculum have an oversupply of teachers.
According to TSC, the implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) in primary and junior schools resulted in changes to staffing arrangements and a reduction in the number of classroom lessons offered by each teacher.
The commission claims that there is an overabundance of 18,194 instructors due to a discernible decrease in the demand for teachers in elementary schools.
TSC announced plans to disperse a number of instructors around schools in order to address the junior secondary teacher shortage and ensure a more balanced and lower teacher-pupil ratio in all schools.
TSC stated earlier this year that it will keep examining primary and post-primary staffing levels and processes in order to improve the equitable distribution of teachers throughout all educational institutions in the nation.
During the release of the KCSE in Eldoret, Macharia addressed the media and stated that the introduction of the CBC in primary and junior schools has caused a disruption in staffing levels. As a result, there are now two less classrooms in the primary school level, which are for Standard 7 and 8.
Macharia added that there was a 42,117 teacher shortage in Grade 8 at the Junior School as a result of the addition of an extra class in 2024. To facilitate and obtain a share of the mass transfer to junior schools, TSC made 6,000 places available for teachers of primary schools who have pursued further education. TSC states that teachers are qualified to teach if they have successfully completed their education degrees and at least eight units in their field of concentration. The professors must also submit their details by March 18, 2023, and they must have received a C+ or above in two of the courses they teach.
