Students Stage Demos, Barricade Nakuru-Eldoret Highway
On Friday, June 7, following student demonstrations, classes at the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) in Nakuru came to a complete stop.
During their protest, the students charged that the college administration was mismanaging the institution and denying them access to necessary programs.
The administration was specifically criticized by the students for not addressing important problems including inadequate classrooms and furniture.
The demonstrators caused a severe traffic jam on the Nakuru – Eldoret Highway by blocking the road while they demanded action.
As the protests got more intense, there was a fight breaking out between the students and the villagers who were trying to keep the angry students in check.
Police tried to disperse the protesters, who were carrying stones and other non-lethal weapons, by firing tear gas canisters at them.
The extensively shared footage show students running for cover while cops chase behind them.
Three months prior, following the deaths of three students in a car accident, students at Meru National Polytechnic held protests.
Enraged by what had happened, the students set up a bonfire and blocked the main roadway that led to Meru town, causing traffic to be disrupted along the Meru – Nanyuki roadway.
The students marched out of the institution and toward Meru town even as the throng kept growing.
In addition to urging the appropriate authorities to take action against the driver, the students sought immediate justice for the deceased.
