Amid political unrest that has left the nation’s second in charge in limbo, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua extended an olive branch to former President Uhuru Kenyatta to reconcile and mend their grievances.
During a stopover in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua asked Uhuru whether they could cooperate to achieve their shared objective of maintaining the prosperity of the Mt. Kenya region.
He did, however, issue a warning, saying that if this wasn’t done, the mountain would face many difficulties.
“Our child is Uhuru Kenyatta. Please allow him to arrive so that we can work together. Does anyone have a grievance against him? Elections are over, right? the DP asked.
“Now we should join hands as children of the mountain and love each other because if we don’t do so, we will go through a lot of problems. Do you want us to unite?” he asked the crowd which responded in agreement.
The DP, who has been a fierce critic of Uhuru, has in the recent past been perceived to take a different political direction amid reports of a fallout with President William Ruto.
Gachagua begged former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta’s pardon in March 2024 for comments he had made in the run-up to the 2022 elections.
In addition, Gachagua recently promised to spearhead the One Man One Shilling One Vote campaign, which has turned out to be a contentious political issue with opposing views that are evenly divided.
Leaders of Mount Kenya have previously urged Gachagua and Uhuru to collaborate and present a unified face in order to lead the region forward.
Wachira Kiago, a Kikuyu Council of Elders member, supported a handshake between Gachagua and Uhuru during the Limuru 3 event on Saturday, May 18. She also urged the two leaders to call a meeting and declare a ceasefire.
“It is premature to begin squabbling over the polls in 2027 and 2032. God is the source of leadership. On Tuesday, May 21, Gachagua said, “Let us work for the people; if it is about positions, relax; God will give them to you.”
This past week, the DP was conspicuously absent from important presidential engagements, leading to conjecture on his relationship with President William Ruto and his purported exclusion from the ruling party.
But Gachagua refuted the accusations, saying he had stopped to pray on Mount Kenya.
