Under the government’s affordable housing scheme, Kenyans will need to show proof of income before being given a home.
According to the Affordable Housing Regulations, 2024, it was stated that supplying the evidence was required because it will assist the Affordable Housing Board in determining an individual’s ability to pay back their mortgage.
Paystubs, which are provided to employees at the end of each month, are one type of evidence of income.
“In accordance with section 49(2) of the Act, an application for allocation of an affordable housing unit shall be accompanied by proof of income and ability to repay for the loan,” the regulations were suggested.
However, applicants will also need to submit proof of identity, such as a passport or national identity card.
Among the documents that applicants who served in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) may submit are military identification documents.
Another requirement mentioned was the submission of a passport-sized photo in order to be considered for a house.
“In accordance with section 49(2) of the Act, an application for allocation of an affordable housing unit shall be accompanied by proof the deposit payable at the rate specified in regulation 10,” according to a portion of the regulations.
Notably, the rules required Kenyans to pay a 10% deposit before being given housing assignments.
“A person shall be eligible for deposit assistance if the person’s monthly income is below Ksh20,000 and the person demonstrates that the affordable housing unit to be purchased shall be their primary residence,” the proposals stated in part.
Furthermore, if the projected monthly repayment for the acquisition of affordable housing units is less than thirty percent of the applicant’s monthly income, someone else will also receive the deposit assistance.
Within 14 days of receiving an application, a decision regarding house allocation will be made.
