Mps propose issuance of special guns
In response to an increase in banditry, the Cohesion Committee of the National Assembly has put out a number of proposals to strengthen security in the North Rift.
In addition to issuing special weaponry to combat the bandits, the MPs suggested on Friday, April 12, during a meeting in Machakos County, creating a new ministry devoted to North Rift concerns.
The MPs pointed out that other nations, like Uganda, had established specialized ministries for regions that faced security issues, thus the establishment of the new ministry would not be unusual.
It was also explained that the new ministry would help in dealing with the marginalisation of the area.
” In an effort to deal with the marginalisation of the region, Members resolved that a ministry dedicated to issues of the North Rift region equivalent to the Ministry of Karamoja Affairs of Uganda should be established,” read the statement by Parliament in part.
On the other hand, the MPs proposed the use of G3 guns among the police and the National Police Reservists (NPRs) who have been deployed for security operations in the area.
The committee noted that the issuance of the guns would be a tactical move aimed at helping the security agencies identify the illegal guns within the area.
At the moment, a few of the cops have AK-47s, which are also used by the robbers.
“After much discussion, the MPs and the Hon. Yussuf Hassan-led Committee agreed that the government should establish a Fund to help compensate victims of bandit-instigated attacks who lost their lives and property.
“They also want legislation that will safeguard the National Police Reservists Unit, remodel the unit, define their roles and enhance their training,” said a portion of the statement.
The lawmakers have called for more government funding for education and have emphasized the need for clearly defined borders within the region to address the ongoing instability.
Because of the violence that has been plaguing the North Rift region in many years, President William Ruto’s administration decided to launch Operation Maliza Uhalifu in 2023.
In addition, police and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel are working together to carry out the security operation.
