Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu was given a fortnight by the National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Thursday, April 11, to deal with rogue officers responsible for the Edu Afya scandal.

This followed rumors that some educational institutions had gotten twice as much funding, which the CS said was made possible by dishonest employees at the institutions in question.

In response to the concerns, the committee instructed the CS to hold any implicated officers accountable and to harmonize his report with the Auditor General’s within a fortnight.A committee member stated, “Students have been suffering since the Edu Afya program ended on December 31, 2022, and the ministry is silent on the way forward.”

In his self-defense, CS Machogu said that the ministry had set up a reimbursement program with the universities that had gotten double funding, which had allowed them to recover Ksh 4.4 million of the Ksh 19 million.

The CS also mentioned that the program officers were being investigated and had been tasked with providing the ministry with pertinent records.

The lawmakers requested that CS Machogu implement a transition program to take the place of the now-defunct EDU Afya.

There were also worries expressed regarding certain institutions’ placement of students above their stated capacity.

The committee questioned whether the action was a ruse to embezzle government funds by rogue ministry officers collaborating with private university accounting officers.

“People will roll their heads. MP Jack Wamboka stated, “We cannot have dishonest officials hoarding public funds at the expense of incredibly deserving youths.”

The CS was also tasked with illuminating the root cause of dysfunction in public education during the meeting.

Machogu was also forced to describe the strategies the ministry had implemented to enhance educational institution management in order for them to effectively carry out their mandate.
