Gachagua Begs Mama Ngina for Forgiveness

Regarding the fallout in 2022, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed apologize to Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the mother of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During a Monday morning roundtable interview with journalists from the Mt Kenya region, the DP clarified that the lawmakers were taken over by the nationwide political upheaval that was occurring at the time.

He added that certain lawmakers have lost respect for the former First Lady as a result of the current environment.

Politics in 2022 had gotten so shady. We had disrespected Mama Ngina to the point where it was out of control, the DP informed the media.

“I wouldn’t again, like the Mt Kenya community, for us to get to that point again of lacking respect for our elders. I would like to ask for forgiveness from Mama Ngina.”

When asked whether he would seek former President Uhuru Kenyatta for a truce meeting to charter the future of Mt Kenya region’s politics, Gachagua responded that ‘These things solve themselves.’

A few months prior to the August general election, in March 2022, several leaders attacked the former first lady, setting off a chain reaction across the nation.

Kenya Kwanza officials at the time encouraged Mama Ngina to stay out of politics after she counseled her son’s followers to take his political lead.

“Uhuru didn’t have an issue with DP Ruto, but would you stay there if your deputy treated you disrespectfully? The former First Lady gave advice at the time, saying, “You will move on.”

At the time, Uhuru had backed former prime minister Raila Odinga’s candidacy for president over that of William Ruto, his then-deputy.

“I hope she stays out of politics.” Senator Samson Cherargei of Nandi retorted, “Stay in the firing line if she decides to play politics when the field gets crowded.”

Later, women’s leaders called for an apology from the Kenya Kwanza leaders, claiming that their words were an insult to the country’s head of state at the time.

BBI Direction

Gachagua further disclosed in the interview that hubris was the reason behind the failure of Uhuru and Raila’s Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

“BBI’s supporters were haughty, pounding their chests and told us it would be shoved down our throats like medicine, which is why it failed. We would have thought about passing it if they had handled the whole thing with dignity,” he said.
