Mandatory TVET Enrollment for NYS Graduates Seeking Jobs Abroad
On Friday, February 23, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria suggested that all National Youth Service (NYS) graduates be employed at Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) establishments in order to provide them with the necessary skills for the workforce.
Speaking at the national admittance of New York State Recruits from all 1,400 wards, Kuria affirmed that he was working with the Council of Governors to compel the proposition.
Kuria claimed that graduates will be able to take advantage of additional courses offered by the universities and get ready to take positions that President William Ruto obtained overseas.
President Ruto ordered last year that Kenyans looking for work overseas complete training before to being deployed.
“I’m also in discussion with the Council of Governors to have all the TVETS across the country absorb these graduates when they complete their courses and make sure they benefit from extra courses in those institutions for the readiness of our job export programs,” he said.
Additionally, the CS confirmed that the grads were the ones who went through the rigorous hiring procedure.
“We had to make sure that all those who underwent the recruitment program are those who graduated today. To date, we have selected over 8,000 and by Monday we will have over 15,000 at Gilgil and in Naivasha,” he stated.
“Also, we need to ensure all graduates emanate from every ward across the country. We also had to ensure a free and fair process was done to select the graduates. We remember Ruto promising that 80 per cent of these graduates will be absorbed in the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).”
“If we started on a wrong footing, it means that all these sectors would have corrupt people,” he added.
The CS explained that the government applied biometrics to register the NYS recruits across all the wards to eliminate the issue of ghost workers.
“The use of Biometrics in the registration of all our sectors and more so education and public systems will go a long way toward curbing ghost workers as well as all other forms of malpractice,” he remarked.
“I am very impressed by the systems put in place to ensure continuous free and fair onboarding of our newly recruited NYS officers in different paramilitary colleges across the country.”
Kuria pointed out that he would enforce the initiative across every sector to enable a free and transparent process.
