Gang Steals Body From Hospital Over Ksh 921K Bill
Breakins at the War Memorial Hospital morgue resulted in the theft of a preserved body valued at Ksh 921,000 by thieves.
Patricia Musale, chief executive officer of the Nakuru War Memorial, verified the robbery event on Friday, February 23, following the discovery of the body gone from the cool room.
Madalene Mwikali, 73, passed away on September 28, 2023, and her body has been in storage at the mortuary since then.
When her family first attempted to retrieve the body, police officials blocked them because they had locked up the hospital.
They had to wait for the hospital to settle its disagreements with the county government in order to transfer ownership because of this impediment.
They had no idea that they would be stuck with a cumulative bill for the whole time the body was being held in storage and the hospital was closed.
Mwikali’s family has been in constant pain since they were unable to bury their relatives. This came after she was hospitalized to the same hospital due to an ailment that ultimately claimed her life. Since then, the family has asked the court to allow them to get the body, but the hospital has blocked them even more, claiming that they still owe money.
Even with a court order, they were unable to access the building because county askaris were stationed inside, despite the court’s ruling permitting them to retrieve the remains.
Despite a Nakuru Environment and Land court judgment directing the county government to permit operations to continue pending a ruling, the hospital is still shuttered as of right now.The matter was transferred to a Nairobi court that had the same jurisdiction when the court order was disregarded.
