The Laikipia County Assembly’s proceedings came to a halt on Tuesday due to physical altercations between MCAs, who were part of opposing factions arguing over plans to remove Minority Leader Sammy Lekopien Parletto.
A portion of the MCAs began to demonstrate as Speaker Lantano Nabaala began reading aloud a motion of notice of impeachment intended to force Lekopien Parletto out of office, which sparked the ruckus.
The MCAs were observed pushing and throwing items at one another during the hearings. Speaker Nabaala and his deputy, Anthony Theuri, had a physical altercation at one point. The MCAs who backed the minority leader contended that majority of them were uninformed when the notice was read because there had been no prior communication.
The MCAs began banging on their desks while other county lawmakers stormed out of the house after the Speaker read the notice and the Deputy Speaker engaged his boss in a duel.”You wish to make the house quiet. “It is not feasible as this residence is subject to legal regulations,” Parleto declared to the media as he bounded from the residence.
Others expressed their outright dismay and denounced the way the planned removal had been executed. One of the MCAs, Gitahi Macharia, told reporters, “The way things have gone here today has shocked us, that we have a County Assembly that does not follow law and order.”
In the meantime, the politicians overpowered the guards keeping watch over the assembly, forcing policemen to step in and mediate. After the squabbling, the county assembly was adjourned and the proceedings were rescheduled at a later time.
69 MCAs in Kisii have signed an impeachment resolution that aims to remove Deputy Governor Robert Monda. The MCAs accused the Deputy Governor of flagrant misconduct and abuse of power when they filed the motion on February 20.
