Gov’t Announces Initial Self-Registration for SHIF
The government has declared that Kenyans will be required to take part in a new registration process for the Social Healthcare Insurance Fund (SHIF), according to Health Cabinet Secretary (CS), Susan Nakhumicha.During a public engagement event in Wote Makueni County, the Chief Security Officer emphasized that Kenyans will need to re-register for the new health coverage, which she described as a smooth process.
Additional information about the registration process showed that Kenyans would need to complete a self-registration process during the SHIF’s initial registration. The CS states that the self-registration procedure is anticipated to guarantee a smooth registration process and lower expenses associated with the onboarding procedure.
“There would be little disruption to Kenyans as the new members will be registered to SHA in a smooth manner. Through early self-registrations, it will help minimize expenditures, according to CS Nakhumicha. The CS also mentioned during the occasion that a crucial component of attaining medical health mobility would be the digitization of the Social Health Authority.
In an effort to broaden the purview of health care coverage, the CS also revealed that the new SHIF will pay for services like assistive equipment. The government’s decree from January 22 mandating the mandatory registration of all Kenyans to SHIF will be followed by the new SHIF registration.
In addition, amid rumors about the new health coverage, the government imposed the mandatory age of 25 for registration.Though there has been strong opposition to the program, on January 19 the Court of Appeal withdrew rulings that had prevented the government from implementing the Act, giving the government a reprieve.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) rejected the planned fees, claiming they were excessive, among other organizations that opposed their implementation. The government has insisted that its implementation will be significant and that Kenyans working in the unorganized sector will be required to register.
