Timelines for New Health Insurance Registration & Deductions
According to Timothy Olweny, the chair of the Social Health Authority (SHA), the government is working nonstop to have the new health insurance scheme launched on March 1.
In an interview, Olweny said that the ongoing public involvement, parliamentary approval, and gazetting of the draft regulations will take place in February.
In the event that the government’s plan is implemented, Kenyans will consequently need to register under the new program from scratch within ninety days.
Kenyans who receive a salary, however, will register during the first nine days of March since wage deductions must be submitted to the relevant body by the ninth of each month.
Kenyans who are salaried should see the new deduction appear on their paystubs in February according to the suggested timelines. It is suggested that Kenyans who work contribute 2.75 percent of their income toward health insurance.
“It was intended for registration to open in early March. There is not much time left since, after two weeks of public input, the legislation must be approved by the legislative bodies before the gazettement may take place. He said, “We’re still working with it, but it’s a very tight time frame.”
However, as soon as they register, Kenyans who do not receive a salary will start to see the new deductions.
A metric will be implemented by the government to ascertain the amount Kenyans who work in the informal sector would have to pay.
The majority of Kenyans working in the unofficial sector will have to pay Ksh300 for health care, according to President William Ruto and Health CS Susan Nakhumicha.
Olweny emphasized that, notwithstanding the National Health Insurance Fund’s (NHIF) transition to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), Kenyans will continue to be insured in the meantime. Olweny says NHIF ought to accomplish this in a year.
“At the moment the NHIF infrastructure is still in operation because we did not want to interfere with service provision,” he said.
