44 000 ECDE children to benefit from school feeding programme
A school feeding program for children enrolled in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) has been started by Samburu County.
Governor Lati Lelelit announced that 583 public ECDE centers located throughout 15 wards in the county will benefit from the program as she kicked off food distribution.Lati promised that food will be provided for the kids from the moment the schools open till they close. To make sure that all the kids benefit, the governor has assembled a committee to map out the areas in need and determine whether a new ECDE center has to be built.
He revealed that the school feeding programme at the ECDE level has seen increase in enrollment from 43,000 to 44,000 children in the new term. The county government purchased 8,000 bags of rice, cooking oil, beans and porridge flour, which will be distributed to all the ECDE centres.
Lati is optimistic that the initiative will see the enrollment in the ECDE centre increase to 70,000 pupils in four years.”We have seen time and again how various types of school feeding programmes boost the enrollment of children in ECDE which is an important aspect in the realisation of Vision 2030 in our country, and also to achieve my dream of ensuring that the education standards in the county improve,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed the government’s pledge to use progressive budgetary allocation to make significant investments in the development of infrastructure in ECDEs.Although they were still far from reaching their intended goal of establishing at least two classrooms in each ECDE, he claimed the efforts were already paying off.According to Lati, his administration will allocate money to support basic education in the county during the upcoming fiscal year.
The governor made a call to action for the federal government, the business community, parents, well-wishers, and other interested parties to work together with his administration to improve the environment and ECDE learning programs for kids. The feeding initiative, according to County Executive Committee Member for Education Mark Ekaale, will keep students in schools and help them perform better as a result.
