Universities Approved to Offer Law Courses

A list of all institutions in Kenya authorized to offer legal education has been released by the Council of Legal Education; this list includes universities whose approvals were still pending.The council said in a Gazette Notice that was released on Friday that four universities had been given permission to conduct Master of Laws programs.

The four are Mount Kenya University (MKU) School of Law, whose license expires on March 23, 2026, and Strathmore Law School, whose license is good until November 19, 2024.On June 20, 2028, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) School of Law and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law will both be subject to review.

17 institutions were approved to offer Bachelor of Laws degree programme.These include Daystar University School of Law Valley Road Campus, MKU School of Law Parklands Campus, University of Nairobi Faculty of Law Kisumu Campus, Kisii University School of Law, University of Embu School of Law, Umma University School of Law.

The others are Egerton University Faculty of Law, Africa Nazarene University  School of Law, Moi University School of Law, Chuka University Faculty of Law,  and Uon Faculty of Law – Parklands Campus. The list also featured Kabarak University School of Law, Maseno University School  of Law, Strathmore Law School, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA)  Faculty of Law, and South Eastern University. The MKU School of Law, Parklands Campus, Kisii University School of Law, Kenya  Institute of Management, and CUEA Faculty of Law are the four universities  authorized to offer a Diploma in Law.

Pending Approval

The application for Daystar University School of Law to renew its authorization to  provide Bachelor of Laws degrees has been finished. On October 19, 2023, the institution was inspected by the Council, subject to  permission. The same was true for the Bachelor of Laws and Diploma programs at MKU  School of Law, Parklands Campus. Following an inspection on November 1, 2023, Kenya School of Law submitted a  bid to offer a Diploma in Law (Para Legal Studies). The Council has not yet made  a decision on the proposal. It was time to evaluate the Bachelor of Laws degree-granting licenses from Kenyatta University School of Law and Riara Law School.
