Ministry Announces Changes in KCSE Grading System

A revised grading scheme has been implemented by the Ministry of Education and will be reflected in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results for 2023. The mean grade computation will only take into account two required subjects—mathematics and a language, which can be either English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language—as per the new grading scheme. On December 18, 2023, at Lenana School in Nairobi, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu highlighted this noteworthy development during the announcement of Form One Placement results for the 2023 KCPE applicants.

In addition to the two obligatory subjects, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will factor in the five best-performed subjects by each candidate. CS Machogu underscored that this reform aims to increase the number of students eligible for admission to universities, diploma programs, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs at certificate and artisan levels.

Traditionally, the KCSE exam grading system involved seven subjects, including English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, two Science subjects, and two additional subjects. The adjustment comes in response to concerns raised by the Presidential Working Party on Education reforms, highlighting that the previous 8-4-4 grading system disadvantaged some learners whose top-performing subjects were not recognized if they did not align with a specific cluster.

The results of the 2023 KCSE Exam would be made public during the second week of January, according to CS Machogu. There were 903,260 candidates for the exam, which was held from October 23 to November 24. We are done with the marking,” Machogu said in an interview with The Nation, revealing that the present emphasis is on confirming the markings. Right now, we’re gathering the grades, validating them, and verifying them. so that we can publish reliable results at the end of the day.
