Olympics Athlete Benjamin Kiplagat Found Dead
The body of long-distance runner Edward Kiplagat, also known as Benjamin, was discovered inside a car in Eldoret on Sunday.Stephen Okal, the commander of Moiben Sub-County Police, said that the athlete’s body was discovered in his brother’s vehicle in Texas, close to Kimumu Secondary School on Eldoret-Iten Road.
The Police Commander also confirmed that Kiplagat’s body showed a deep knife cut on the neck.He added that a team of officers was dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident.
Over the course of his 17-year career, the 34-year-old has won multiple medals, including bronze at the African Championships and silver at the World Under 20 Championships. He has also placed in the top 8 in both the Commonwealth and All-African Games.
In the Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, he finished 38th overall, according to the World Athletics Rankings.He has taken part in tournaments all around the world throughout the years, such as the Hengelo Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in the Netherlands, the Shanghai Samsung Diamond League, Lausanne Athletissima in Switzerland, and Paris Meeting Areva.
After years of dominance by the Kenyan competitors, Kiplagat made history in June 2012 when he earned bronze in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final. This was the first medal of any sort won by a male athlete from Uganda.
The event comes following the assassination of athlete Agnes Tirop in September 2021, a few weeks after she set a world record in Germany.The fact that Tirop’s body was discovered in her Iten house with many stab wounds indicated how vicious the crime was.Ibrahim Rotich, her husband, is the primary suspect in her murder and is presently being held pending trial.
