Concerns over the protracted wait for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results have been expressed by Kenyans, especially with the holiday season fast approaching. The national exams ended on November 24. The marking period started on December 11 and ended on December 11. The public is eagerly expecting the results, but the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has not yet provided a precise publication date.
Expressing their concerns, some Kenyans emphasized the potential impact of delayed results on the Christmas spirit. On the other hand, contrasting views were presented, suggesting that a rushed release might compromise the integrity of the results. OpiyoOdiwuor raised the question of whether a short period could affect result integrity, intertwining this concern with the anticipation of the Christmas festivities.
Arap_Nyasikera offered a historical perspective, pointing out that in years past, the KCSE results were usually announced in February, giving people enough time to enjoy Christmas and New Year’s Eve without worrying too much. With reference to the recent KCPE problems, the tweet expressed hope for a more seamless procedure overseen by CS Machogu and alluded to the increased concern among candidates awaiting KCSE results.
In response to the mounting concerns, KNEC added a layer of complexity by inviting an international delegation from various examination boards on December 19 to observe the processing of the KCSE results. Dr. David Njengere, the CEO of KNEC and president of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA), welcomed representatives from Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, South Sudan, Zambia, and Eswatini. This move aimed at fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas to establish common standards across African examination boards.
Kenyans are generally concerned about the change in the timing of the KCSE results release. Results were usually released a few days before Christmas in the four years prior to the disruption brought on by the coronavirus, giving parents plenty of time to make plans and choose appropriate gifts for their children.
But because of the pandemic-related interruption to the school calendar, the release timetable now coincides with test dates, which has raised public anxiety and confusion.
