Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns have been assured by President William Ruto that they will be able to find work following their two-year service term. He underlined that before intern teachers become permanent and pensionable employees, the government maintains a two-year internship program. The President encouraged JSS intern teachers to be patient and follow the prescribed procedure on Sunday during a media roundtable at the State House.
The JSS intern teachers are anticipated to start their internships in January, which will complete the need for full-time employment. President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s support for this process and emphasized how it will be used in a number of industries. He emphasized the Public Service Commission’s recent intern intake, pointing out that internships are essential for both career and educational growth.
President Ruto promised JSS intern teachers that they would be given priority for employment after their two-year internships, acknowledging their concerns about working for a whole year without adequate employment terms. JSS intern teachers were first employed by the Teacher Service Commission under a one-year contract last year, and they are currently in the process of having their contracts renewed for an additional year.
JSS intern teachers, situated in primary schools across the country, have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of permanent employment terms despite their substantial workload. There have been threats of a work boycott in January if their status is not confirmed.
In accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding with the Teacher Service Commission, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) insisted on intern teachers’ rapid placement on permanent and pensionable terms rather than extending their contracts. Collins Oyuu, Knut Secretary General, underlined that the first suggested one-year contract ought not to be renewable.
