TSC to face Senators on Verification of Interns and Teacher Hiring
Senators will soon be questioning the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on claims of discrimination and the status of contract teachers, especially those employed by junior secondary schools (JSS).
Senators are looking for answers regarding allegations of prejudice in hiring permanent and pensionable teachers, as well as in regular replacements and recruitments.
This comes as a result of a growing threat from thousands of contract JSS teachers, who have threatened to go on strike in January unless the TSC agrees to hire them on a permanent and pensionable basis.
Contrary to this demand, the Commission has signaled intentions to extend their contracts rather than transitioning them to permanent and pensionable positions.
Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri, leading the charge, has called upon the Nancy Macharia-led commission to address the concerns raised by the lawmakers. Okenyuri, pictured above, has directed the Senate Education Committee, chaired by Muranga Senator Joe Nyutu, to summon Macharia to provide explanations on the matter.
In particular, Okenyuri requests information from the TSC regarding the instructors’ eligibility for permanent and pensionable employment.
The growing tension over these teachers’ employment status and the need for openness and equity in the recruitment and treatment of educators inside the educational system are reflected in the upcoming Senate investigation.
