Ruto Strikes Monetisation Deal With META for Kenyan Creatives
On Tuesday, President William Ruto declared that his administration had reached an agreement with Meta to allow Kenyan artists to get paid via the company’s social media channels.
Ruto announced at Jamhuri Day celebrations that content creators will now be able to make money on Facebook and Instagram.
“This administration has taken deliberate steps to invest in the creative industry. I have good news for our creatives and those who imagine and produce content through Facebook and Instagram,” the President stated.
“Just yesterday, META committed to helping creators in Kenya earn money for crafting original content.”
The President announced that the deal with META was done following a successful pilot program with select eligible creators in the country.
META will be expanding monetisation opportunity and allow more creators to earn a living doing what they love,” the President added.
During the ceremonies of Jamhuri Day last year, Ruto had first launched a conversation with META about monetizing local content. Regarding content monetization, I have had direct conversations with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. A year ago, Ruto said, “I wonder what the content on my small Facebook page would earn me daily if I wasn’t a State officer.” Video reels uploaded on META’s platforms could definitely be monetized, the organization declared in October.
The biggest winners will be Kenyans with sizable Facebook and Instagram followings, as payment would be determined by engagement metrics like the quantity of shares, likes, and comments.
Although the qualifying standards may vary in the future, at this moment, monetization is contingent upon a minimum of 1,000 views.
The administration of President William Ruto has been considering digital employment opportunities, particularly for young people.
