In Mukurweini, Nyeri County, two schoolgirls drown at a dam
Mukurweini, in Nyeri County, had shocked the locals on Thursday when two of the girls drowned in the nearby dam.
While narrating the ordeal, Veronica Wanjiru, a mother to one of the girls noted she was informed of the situation while at work which prompted her to quickly rush to the scene to confirm if indeed it was her daughter who had died.
“I was called and told that my daughter had died in a dam and that is when I came here and found the situation as it is,” Wanjiru noted.
The second girl’s uncle Francis Gioko regretted the incident, describing her late niece as a good girl who had lofty dreams.
“The deceased is the daughter to my late sister. She has been an orphan since both her parents passed away. I am heartbroken by this incident”
Speaking at the scene of the incident, Mukurweini MP John Kagucia extended his condolences to the families revealing that he is working with the government to ensure that the dam is fenced to stop a reoccurrence of the same heading into the future.
“ It is very sad for a young school-going child to proceed on holiday only for them to die in such an unfortunate incident such as this one. I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to these families,” Kaguchia noted.
“We have said we will come here on Monday with the county disaster management team so that we can assess the situation and start embarking on fencing the dam.”
Residents have been warned against allowing their children to play near the dam.
Caroline Were Assistant County Commander Mukurweini stated, “The Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, village elders, and residents have agreed that no children will be allowed to come and play here; let them play somewhere else because this area has become dangerous.”
Barely a week has passed when a boat carrying five passengers overturned in Lake Victoria near Aneko Beach, Nyatike, in Migori County, resulting in their untimely deaths.
The boat was about to dock when the tragedy occurred when strong winds struck the body of water, causing the boat to capsize and sink.
