Residents of Kisumu Demonstrate Over Insecurity
On Saturday, a furious mob blocked a section of Kisumu County’s Miwani-Mamboleo Road in protest at an increase in insecurity in the area, paralyzing transportation services along the route. The majority of the locals, who were from the Mamboleo region, blocked the main road and started a borne fire while demanding that the threat be stopped right away.
After a middle-aged man was mugged and attacked by unidentified individuals on Friday night while strolling along the road, the demonstrations became more intense.Despite being taken to the hospital immediately, the victim reportedly did not make it; on Saturday morning, while undergoing treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital in Kisumu, he passed away from his wounds.
“We were today met by rude shock after realising that a young man had been killed here yesterday at around 8 pm and similarly a fortnight ago, another young man was shot deal just in the same place,” stated one of the demonstrators. The majority of the locals claim that they have recently been obliged to close their businesses early due to fear of being attacked.
“We call on the government to heed our cries and bring more police officers here in Mamboleo so that we can have adequate patrol done, we demand a patrol base established here,” said a local. In an address to media, Kisumu East OCPD Joseph Obara stated that in an effort to curb the recent trend, the government has sent more officers to the region.
Investigations have also been started, according to the OCPD, to apprehend those responsible for the muggings and deaths that have occurred in the neighborhood. This road has been the scene of several events; it is a hotspot. We have designated it as a hotspot for this holiday season and have put security measures in place to guard it,” stated Obara.
“We realised our roads are very poor, so we have some motorbikes which we shall be using to monitor these thugs and robbers.”Two months prior, people in Khwisero, Kakamega, protested in the streets against insecurity, bemoaning the loss of lives and property. The locals charged the police with being incompetent as they marched to the sub-county headquarters across the Ekonjero market. As a result, they called for the local police boss to be transferred right away.
