H/teachers Capture Data of Interns Willing To Renew Contract: TSC

School heads have been directed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to begin the process of renewing internship contracts for intern teachers in primary and secondary schools. Teachers who are willing to extend their contracts for the term of January 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025, are the ones who are offered this extension.

As per the order, individuals who are interested must furnish the TSC Sub-County Director with a copy of their personal accident cover for the engagement time by December 7, 2023, at 4:00 pm. Details must be submitted using the template that is supplied.

This directive follows protests from junior secondary school (JSS) intern teachers who are against the renewal of their internship contracts. The teacher interns are advocating for conversion to permanent and pensionable terms, arguing that serving a one-year internship is sufficient.

In January 2024, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia made it clear that the organization would extend the contracts of current intern teachers; the earliest absorption into permanent and pensionable terms would be in 2025.

Macharia ruled out converting the existing 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms due to budget constraints. She emphasized that the conversion would occur automatically after two years of service, and the terms would change depending on the recruitment month. TSC plans to recruit an additional 20,000 intern teachers to support Grade 8 classes starting in January.

A monthly stipend of Kshs. 15,000 is given to interns associated with primary  schools and Kshs. 20,000 to those associated with high schools. JSS intern teachers, however, are protesting and demonstrating against the  extension of internship contracts by one more year.

The interns are pushing for permanent employment terms after serving for a year, and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) has threatened industrial action in January if TSC fails to convert the teachers to permanent and pensionable terms.
