Two Pedestrians Among 5 Killed In Kikopey Trailer Accident

On Sunday night, a trailer lost control at  Kikopey on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, slamming into onlookers  and then crashing into a building where  a number of people were playing pool. Five  people died instantly.

Six other people suffered severe injuries and are currently getting treatment at the  Gilgil Sub-County Hospital.

Confirming the accident on Monday night, Rift Valley Red Cross regional manager Michele Ayabei said the accident involved three vehicles including two trailers and a North Rift shuttle.

Mr Ayabei said all the vehicles were heading towards Nakuru Town before the 9:30pm accident. He said the driver of one of the trailers lost control, and rammed into the passenger matatu, that further hit another trailer that was ahead of it.

According to Francis Tumbo, the head of Gilgil sub-county police, the incident was verified and the two pedestrians were struck at  approximately 9 p.m. when they were strolling down the roadway.

The head of police urged people to use caution when crossing the street, citing  a similar incident in which a 16-seater matatu collided with a trailer, instantly killing four men and a kid.

As the accident investigation proceeded, the deceased’s bodies were transferred  to the mortuary of the Gilgil sub-county hospital.
