Raila Gives Way Forward On Bipartisan Talks Report
On Wednesday, the National Dialogue Committee’s (NDC) suggestions were approved by the Azimio Parliamentary Group (PG).Raila Odinga, the chief of Azimio, called the report an excellent start, but he also described it as incomplete because it left out important factors like the cost of living.
Following the PG meeting, Raila said that Azimio will be talking to more Kenyans in the upcoming weeks to figure out how to deal with the expense of living, which he called intolerable for the majority of Kenyans.”On the issue that matters most to us, we have decided to part ways. We presented what we thought were workable solutions to the growing expense of life. However, the government side vehemently objected, calling it their exclusive domain,” stated the Azimio leader.
Raila further hinted at the possibility of a referendum which he stated would allow the coalition to legally entrench certain proposals such as the creation of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition and the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.
“At all times we will retain the right to call on the people to take steps that we deem necessary to force the government to lower the cost of living,” Raila said.Raila criticized the government’s stance as well, saying that it will keep deducting money from the Housing Levy.
Alice Wahome, the cabinet secretary for land, has stated that the government will carry out the deductions in spite of the court judgment.”Our delegation had called for the complete overhaul of the Finance Act 2023 which had come with harsh taxation measures that made lives unbearable at no expense to the government,” Raila said.
Raila claims that the court has already made a decision on the subject and that it is unconstitutional to try to go against its rulings. The former prime minister demanded that the employers immediately cease the deductions.
