A police report states that on Wednesday, as the officer was clocking out of work, he shot himself dead inside the Kipkaren River Police Station in Uasin Gishu County. The officer had asked permission from the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to travel to Eldoret Township in order to take care of his personal matters.
The police chief approved the request, but before the officer could go about running his errands, he had to check out and turn in his gun.
According to preliminary investigations, the officer hurried to the Armoury and started dismantling the gun.Upon extracting the magazine with a single round of ammo in the chamber, the officer inadvertently pulled the trigger, ultimately resulting in the lethal shot being fired. His lower jaw was shot, and the bullet left his skull through the upper back portion.
When OCS Kipkaren and his deputy arrived at the site after the gunfire, they discovered the corporal already laying in the bloody pool inside the police station’s Armoury area.Along with the Deputy Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) and Crime Scene Investigations Officers, the Sub-County Police Commander in Turbo processed and recorded the scene.
“The body was removed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Eldoret hospital morgue awaiting autopsy,” according to a portion of the report. This episode is one of several concerning cops who have accidentally shot themselves in the head and sustained self-inflicted wounds.
Recently, while on patrol, a police officer from Kilimani inadvertently shot himself in the right leg’s index toe. The officer was taken to the hospital immediately for treatment.
