Ruto gives CS Chirchir directive on electricity prices

Following President William Ruto’s directive to the Ministry of Energy to increase the distribution of hydroelectric power, Kenyans may soon see lower electricity costs.Speaking at the State House on Monday following a Cabinet meeting presided over by the Head of State, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed reported a 20% increase in the production of hydro-generated power.

That’s because there has been a lot of rain falling in different sections of the nation lately.”Cabinet also directed the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in consultation with all agencies within the sector to give priority to maximum production, uptake and distribution of hydro-generated power,” said Hussein Mohammed.

The spokesman added that the distribution of electricity should take into account the consumer’s adoption of hydro-generated power as well as the reduction of between 15% and 10% of diesel-generated power, which is thought to be more costly.Kenyans have been struggling in recent months with rising power bills in addition to growing living expenses.

Prices per token unit for hydro-generated power will be reduced if this happens.Mohamed added in his speech that the Ruto administration had heeded the warning issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department. He further maintained the claim that departmental communication led to the Head of State’s downgrade from El Nino to heavy rainfall.

“All Kenyans should exercise patience and caution while travelling, wait for storm waters to subside before attempting to cross roads, report any instances of flooding or landslides to the authorities and strictly follow all guidelines issued by the government,” Hussein said the public.

In order to lessen the consequences of El Nino, the Cabinet decided to mobilize a  Ksh7 billion contingency fund, which will be distributed to the counties. It stated that 38 counties are experiencing an El Nino alarm, with 76 confirmed  deaths and over 35,000 displaced people. Previously, it was argued by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that the National  Government was unable to provide counties with more funding in response to the  continuous rains.
