When a Reverend and his companion tried to cross a river at Kalamba in Makueni County on Saturday night, they were washed away by surges of water. It is thought that the 63-year-old late Reverend Joseph Kimosi Mbalya served as a minister at Maumba AIC-Kalamba DCC. Three years ago, he retired.
Nzaui District County Commissioner Timothy Tirop said that the two were crossing River Ivoesyo which is between Muani and Upendo at midnight when the tragedy happened.”The Reverend and his passenger who is yet to be identified waited till midnight and decided to cross the river when they were swept away,” said Tirop.
The eyewitness stated that when the river began to swell, the preacher and several others had made the decision to sleep in their automobiles. It is thought that the pastor woke up from his slumber and unintentionally drove into the river.Inside the vehicle was discovered the preacher’s corpse.
“I was woken up by screams from neighbours who witnessed the vehicle being swept away by the river. The pastor was coming from Wote town before the tragedy struck just past Upendo shopping centre,” John Mwanthi, a resident whose homestead is adjacent to the river, said.
“We have gotten the body of Reverend. We are waiting for police from Emali to pick up the body and start the search for the other passenger,” said the area Chief Harrison Mutuku. He urged people to be cautious during this period.
The incident happened barely 72 hours after eight other people were killed by the flooded river Muuoni in Mbitini ward.Three bodies have since been found, while the search for the other five is still continuing.
