Tana River bursts its banks

The Tana River has overflowed its banks, according to the Kenya National  Highways Authority. The river overflowed its banks between the Tana River Bridge and Madogo Total  Station, Mororo, according to a statement released by KeNHA on Saturday. According to KeNHA, it caused the area between Madogo Town and the Tana  River Bridge to flood.

The Authority said the road in the section is rapidly eroding potentially leading to dangerous washouts.

“Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the road section. Similarly, area residents are advised to avoid idling near flooding waters, as there are risks of stray crocodile attacks,” the statement read.

“The KeNHA team is on the ground closely monitoring the situation and will update on progress.”

The Authority declared that it will start the necessary restoration work as soon as  the water levels drop. This occurs at a time when El Nino rains are plaguing the  nation, causing flooding in certain areas.certain roads have been completely  blocked off, forcing locals to find alternate ways, while certain sections of roads  have become impassable.

A portion of the Mbogolo bridge washed away by violent floods on Saturday, making the Mombasa-Malindi road unusable. Both the Isiolo-Garissa and Hola-Garissa highways in Garissa were inundated. According to needs assessments carried out in the two counties by the Flood  Command Center, which is overseen by the National Disaster Operations Centre  (NDOC), as of November 23, 2023, Garissa and Tana River are two of the most  heavily hit counties by flooding. A few kilometers from Kilifi town, near Mtondia, another portion of the Mombasa-Malindi route was under water. The route is closed, and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a traffic advisory.Kenyans have been reassured by President William Ruto that efforts are in place to lessen the impact of the ongoing flood calamity.According to the President, the heavy rains resulted in the displacement of 36,000 homes and at least 70 fatalities.
