TSC intends to recruit 18000 teachers in Dec

A new initiative by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) calls for hiring  18,000 intern teachers for junior secondary schools. This program intends to place these teachers prior to the January 2024 school  reopening. It will start following the Kenya National Examination (KCSE). Furthermore, the TSC intends to automatically extend the contracts of current  intern instructors if they choose to do so.

It is mandatory for intern teachers hired in January of this year to extend their  accident insurance for a further year. These currently employed intern teachers will become permanent members of  the TSC in 2025. A sizable portion of intern teachers, however, are opposed to this news since  they find the choice depressing.

The intern teachers recruited in January had anticipated confirmation after the completion of their contracts in December 2023. While the Education Committee in Parliament had earlier suggested the absorption of all 46,000 teachers employed on internship terms after two years, the recent TSC announcement has sparked discontent among the teacher community.

The low compensation is a depressing factor for many intern teachers, especially in light of the present cost of living. Monthly compensation for intern teachers in primary schools is set at Kshs. 15,000, while intern teachers in secondary schools are paid Kshs. 20,000.However, secondary school instructors see a drop of about sh. 2500 and elementary school teachers see a reduction of about sh. 1500 as a result of new tax deductions.
