Governor Kawira Set to Request Dissolution of Meru County Gov’t
On Thursday, frustrated Governor Kawira Mwangaza declared that she was be prepared to request that President William Ruto dissolve the Meru County Government. The first-term governor lamented her frustration with the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), claiming that they were preventing her from carrying out her mission.
Governor Mwangaza said that the MCAs were plotting a dark scheme to remove 12 County Executive Committee (CEC) members who were employed by her administration. The county head claims that after two fruitless attempts to impeach her, the MCAs have been looking into other ways to impede her.
On November 9, the Senate rejected Mwangaza’s impeachment motion, with a majority of senators rejecting each of the seven accusations made against her by Meru MCAs. The Kenyan Constitution states that in extraordinary situations, including internal strife or war, the President may suspend a County Government.
The County Government will be suspended for ninety days in the event that President William Ruto grants Mwangaza’s request. The Governor and every MCA will have to ask the voters for a new mandate when the ninety-nine days have passed. According to sources, the beleaguered governor had consented to assist with gathering signatures in order to initiate the dissolution process. After serving as the Meru County Woman Representative, Kawira was elected as governor as an independent candidate.
Mwangaza will have the freedom to run for a different political party or defend her seat as an independent in the event that the Meru County Government is dissolved. Notably, she has previously demonstrated a readiness to collaborate with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
