Azimio MP Suspended
Tuesday afternoon in Parliament saw a contentious discussion among lawmakers on President William Ruto’s State of the Nation Address from last week.
After being expelled from the parliament due to comments he made about the Majority Leader, his deputy, and the Kenya Kwanza administration, Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga found himself in hot water.
The lawmaker from Kilifi South criticized President William Ruto on the house floor, arguing that many of his statements were untrue. “Hon Chonga, since you spoke despite not having a microphone, you will not be allowed inside the house for the next two sittings,” Gladys Shollei, the deputy speaker, said.
Representatives who support Kenya Kwanza, such as Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Representative John Kiarie, stood up on point of order and demanded that the MP retract his comments or face expulsion from the house. The first member to rise on a point of order accusing MP Chonga of using unparliamentary language was John Kiarie, the MP for Dagoretti South.
”Is it in order for him to say that we are speaking lies here, the President is speaking lies,” MP Kiarie noted.
”We are degrading the dignity of this house by allowing members to utter careless statements without substantiating, without giving facts, give us a statement of facts of what is the leader of the majority said or his deputy said that was untrue,” Kimani Ichung’wah remarked.
Shollei demanded that the MP withdraw his statement but the orders fell on deaf ears as he declined.
But MP Chonga stated that his sentiments were misunderstood.
Shollei, however, dismissed his response stating that he had made it worse by restating what he was supposed to withdraw.
The MP will now miss the next two sittings.
