Govt Warning Over Dam Outburst
Tana River counties have been advised to prepare for the possibility of floods due to a dam rupture.
The El Niño conditions and positive Indian Ocean Dipole, along with the continuous strong storms, are to blame for the intensified rains, according to the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA) on Tuesday.
The citizens of the three counties—Garissa, Tana River, and Kitui—were told to leave and go to higher rounds. “TARDA has been regularly monitoring the Tana River’s dam levels. A portion of TARDA’s statement stated, “The data reveals a significant increase in water levels, posing a heightened risk of flooding to the surrounding areas.”
“We encourage residents to stay alert and organized in light of these developments. Communities in Tana River, Kitui, and Garissa Counties must migrate to higher ground immediately in response to official warnings in order to be safe.
According to TARDA, as of November 14, measurements at the Tana River bridge in Garissa showed that the water levels were 5.10 meters, suggesting that the situation would get worse.
“Additionally, we advise individuals to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their families and property,” stated TARDA. In order to address the short- and long-term demands resulting from the flood catastrophe along the Tana Delta, the agency also stated that it was closely collaborating with stakeholders from a variety of sectors.
“We will continue assessing the flood situation and providing essential advice on relocating to safer areas in collaboration with the relevant agencies.” The TARDA notification is being issued in the context of Kenya Met’s recent explanation of the El Nino rains that are now occurring throughout the nation.
In contrast to President William Ruto’s declaration, the Kenya Meteorological Department and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua verified the start of the rains on November 10.
“The issue is resolved. It is, El Nino!” said Gachagua. In addition, he declared that the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) had sent out aircraft to deliver KCSE tests to inaccessible regions. Additionally, emergency reaction teams were instructed to be ready for any situation that could endanger lives.
