MP Peter Salasya Attacked by Goons
After his statements at a political event went bad on Sunday, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya was escorted to safety. The MP was seen speaking to Mumias citizens in a widely shared video on the plight of the local sugar industry and how politics had aided in the decline of the once-thriving economic sector.
Salasya criticized Fernandes Barasa, the governor of Kakamega, who was also there, of not doing enough to boost the struggling industry during the ceremony. The MP specifically objected to Wycliffe Oparanya, Barasa’s predecessor, using a bill he had presented to allow the County Government to pay farmers Ksh100 million as a stick to beat Barasa. The MP said that goons who had attacked him shortly after were funded by a prominent local politician.
The ceremony came to a halt when the MP was forced from the stage, physically assaulted, and nearly pinned down by the thugs during the altercation.
But one of Salasya’s security guards swept the MP away from the altercation. The MP said in a statement following the incident, “The goons of this Governor of Kakamega Fernandes Barasa attacked me so innocently while addressing residents of Mumias West, but thank you my tight security for ensuring no one moves closer to me to attack me.” The MP has taken a strong stance in favor of paying dues to sugarcane farmers and giving them priority in things pertaining to the sugar industry. The MP was pressuring the incumbent Governor to carry out reforms that Oparanya had started, which supported cane growers’ interests and the rebirth of the Mumias Sugar Company.
Salasya chastised Barasa during President William Ruto’s August visit to the Western area. The MP said at the time that the Governor had been supporting investors who wished to take advantage of the sugar industry at farmers’ cost.
