Parents knock Ogun teacher arrested for rape
The alleged rape case involving Lateef Olaniran, a math teacher at Ebenezer Grammar School in Iberekodo, Abeokuta, was termed as startling and embarrassing by the Old Students Association and Parents Forum on Thursday.
According to reports, the suspect was taken into custody by the police on Saturday following complaints made against him by a Ministry of Women Affairs staffer. During a news conference conducted on Thursday at the Ogun NUJ secretariat in Ile Iroyin, Oke-
Ilewo, Abeokuta, parents and former students stated that the regrettable event should not be used to characterize the school, which is renowned for its excellent instruction and ability to shape strong characters.
During the press briefing, Alhaji Tajudeen Olori, the National President of the Old Students Association of the school, denounced the act and called for his complete suspension. He was backed by Alhaji Rasheed Fadipe and Pa Aderemi Koleosho, the PTA Chairmen of the Senior and Junior sections of the school, respectively.
The suspect was identified by Olori, who scowled at Olaniran’s behavior, as an absentee teacher who had previously been reported to the state government by the Teaching Service Commission.
He bemoaned the negative perception Olaniran’s actions had cast on the school, stressing that the alleged rape incident had not taken place on school property.
“It is regrettable that Lateef Olaniran teaches at our alma mater, but his acts of rape in this case are personal and unrelated to the school,” Olori stated. He did those things a long way from the school.
“There isn’t any sexual abuse or any kind of student harassment or intimidation in EGSA. “We have always urged our pupils to speak up and be brave when they witness acts of intimidation or harassment. We implore parents of EGSA students to maintain composure and have faith in their kids’ safety both at the school and in our dorm. “EGSA is a morally and academically distinguished institution that will continue to provide excellent leaders for our community and Nigeria as a whole.
“We would want to propose that Lateef Olaniran be placed on immediate suspension while the investigation is ongoing. We respectfully ask that Lateef Olaniran not be brought back to EGSA following an inquiry and maybe a trial. He is no longer able to win back the trust and cooperation of the faculty and students.
