Governor Kawira Mwangaza grilled by Senate
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is defending herself in front of the Senate in an effort to persuade senators to overturn the impeachment resolution that the county MCAs passed.
The governor faced seven charges, including embezzlement, mishandling county funds, and using family members as county appointees.
Senate told her to appear before a plenary after rejecting a move to let a select committee discuss her hearing. The Senate urged the governor to provide an explanation for her catchphrase, “Kaende Kaende, Kabaki Kabaki”. The MCAs had protested that the phrase implied her lack of concern for concerns brought out by other leaders and the voters.
Kawira Mwangaza defended herself by pointing out that the slogan served just as a call to action for progress. The Okolea Program, which was claimed to be a conduit for the embezzlement of county resources, was another topic of intense questioning for the first-term governor.
“My family and church are involved in a development project called Okolea Programme. She justified herself by saying, “The empowerment programs carried out under the project do not utilize county funds.” Kawira went on to say that the County Majority Leader, who had initiated the impeachment motion, had previously backed the effort.
The aforementioned MCA was shown in a video clip shown to the Senate publicly endorsing the effort with Ksh100,000. In the video, he went on to acknowledge that the county had not set aside any funds for the Okolea Program. As the Senate re-played a video showing several irate young people butchering a calf she was giving to a poor family, the governor started crying. She started crying even harder when the lawmakers saw a video of Tigania East Member of Parliament Aburi Mpuru saying that the governor wasn’t a Meruvian native. Mpuru said that because the county was being run by a foreigner, it was falling behind.
