TSC Replacing Teachers Fired for Demanding Transfers From North Eastern

On Monday, the teachers Service Commission (TSC) declared that it had begun  the process of substituting the 2,000 teachers who had been suspended for  pressing for transfers from North Eastern. Speaking in Mombasa at the start of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary  Education (KCSE) exams, TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia said  that the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa will receive the new teaching cohort.

Due to non-local instructors’ refusal to report to their workstations in North Eastern, alleging insecurity, the recruiting was required. Macharia stated that the commission specifically targeted North Eastern certified tutors in an effort to stop a situation like this from happening again.

“Now, teachers in Northern Kenya, obtain a form from the County Education  Director and begin your teaching career,” she said. The head of TSC went on to say that the teacher recruitment drive was only open  in North Eastern.

Macharia said that although qualified instructors from other parts of the nation  were free to apply, local teachers would be given preference. She specifically mentioned the lack of suitable teachers in the area for Islamic  Religious Education and Physics.

Macharia added that the teachers who had received interdiction letters were  still suspended for failing to do their jobs. The CEO went on to say that the commission was looking into why the teachers  who had been placed under investigation had asked to be transferred from North  Eastern, and that their cases will be handled according to the law.

The TSC headquarters in Upperhill, Nairobi was the site of large-scale protests on October 16 by the interdicted teachers.Police used tear gas on them while they requested to speak with CEO Macharia and other senior TSC officials.
