The motion was brought to the floor of the House early in the year got the National Assembly’s nod and was placed on the CS Machogu’s desk for implementation. With just weeks to the end of the academic year and a new one beckoning, little has been done to shield parents and guardians from exorbitant uniform costs.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, the Ministry of Education, uniform requirements cannot be enforced for all pupils nationwide. In his appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Implementation, Machogu made this declaration. He clarified that it is not feasible to have a single, consistent uniform for every student due to the country’s varied climate. Lightweight clothing is more appropriate in warm weather, while substantial items such as sweaters are required in really cold climates.
Machogu also noted that different uniforms are symbolic of distinct cultural traditions. He acknowledged the committee’s advice to develop a policy to prevent cartels that collaborate with school principals to compel parents to purchase uniforms from specific sellers. The ministry has issued a circular to all schools to notify parents not to subscribe to such manipulative tactics.
While the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) had recommended uniforms be standardized nationwide, the Ministry of Education is now giving academic pursuits and the complete adoption of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in the nation top priority.
